Why You Should Consider Starting a Virtual Assistant Business: Surprising Reason #4

You can get retrained in only 90 days.

That’s right. In only 90 days, you can have your new Virtual Assistant business set up and ready to bring in clients. And you can do it all from the comfort of your own home via teleclasses (those are classes held over the phone) and the internet.

Why You Should Consider Starting a Virtual Assistant Business: Surprising Reason #3

You are entering a booming industry.

Demand for Virtual Assistants is growing rapidly. Small businesses and entrepreneurs who need support are discovering that Virtual Assistants can provide it more cost effectively than employees.

Here are three examples to prove my point: (note: a virtual assistant is also a freelancer and an independent contractor, so those words can be used interchangeably)

  1. In January, 2009, published the article “Down Economy a Boon to Virtual Assistants.” In this article, virtual recruiter Gayle Buske of Team Double-Click stated, “Demand for our [virtual assistant] services has actually gone up. A lot of clients are replacing their brick-and-mortar offices with virtual offices. They’re staffing virtually.”
  2. In June, 2009, The New York Times published the article “How to Enlist a Global Work Force of Freelancers.” This article states, “The recession and recent wave of downsizing have forced many corporations to eliminate in-house services and use independent contractors instead.” And, goes on to state, “…freelance marketplaces are booming. In the first quarter of this year, oDesk freelancers logged 830,000 hours, more than double the figure for the same period the year before and five times the rate in 2007. Nearly 234,000 jobs were posted at Elance last year, an increase of 64 percent over the previous year.”
  3. In July, 2009, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published an article titled “A Real Demand for Virtual Assistants.” The article states, “Twelve years ago, the field of virtual assisting hardly existed. ‘Today, the industry is growing by leaps and bounds, and in the next 10 years I think we’ll see a huge explosion in these services,’ said Cindy Opong, owner of Creative Assistants in Colorado Springs, Colo., and president of the International Virtual Assistants Association. The field is growing on both sides of the supply and demand equation.”

Why You Should Consider Starting a Virtual Assistant Business: Surprising Reason #2

You can use what you learn as a Virtual Assistant as a steppingstone to other online or offline businesses.

Starting a new business, whether online or offline, can be quite expensive. Instead of starting your new business by spending a lot of money you may not have, start a Virtual Assistant business. Fortunately, a Virtual Assistant business is one of the least expensive business models to set up.

How Much Does it Cost to Start a Virtual Assistant Business?

To start your Virtual Assistant business, you need the following (many of which you already have):

  1. Up-to-date computer: By up-to-date, I mean you need plenty of memory and harddrive space, both of which are inexpensive to buy if you need more. And you need the basic software programs such as Microsoft Word. My computer is 7 years old. I recently updated it by buying a new monitor. It cost me $150. I’m still using Microsoft Word’s 2002 version. That gives you some idea of how infrequently you need to update your basic software.
  2. High speed internet: This can be DSL, cable or satellite internet. The average cost of the most commonly used high-speed internet service is $50 per month.
  3. Phone with inexpensive, or unlimited, long distance: This can be a cell phone or a landline, whichever you prefer. You need inexpensive or unlimited long distance because as a Virtual Assistant, you’ll talk with people all over the nation.
  4. Website: You should expect to pay $500 to $600 to have your website created for you and between $15 and $25 per month for hosting.

What is Another Advantage to Starting Your Online Career as a Virtual Assistant?

You can earn while you learn.

  • You learn how to market and run a successful online business.
  • You build a network of colleagues and clients.
  • You gain valuable insight to your niche and target market.
