Your posts are worthy reading. Very good points. Being a virtual assistant is really in demand today because of massive lay-off.One who has computer skills and talent; and knowledge in the online media (internet) should somehow consider this profession. It’s a good opportunity and the time and freedom to enjoy life beyond business.

Best,
Tina

Diana,
Thanks for your great questions. Here are my personal opinions based on what I've experienced when working as a VA, hiring VAs for my projects and training, coaching and mentoring VAs.

Q: Is there a difference between a writing specialist who classifies himself as a freelance writer and one who is a VA?

A: In general, a freelancer, a VA and even an independent contractor are all fairly generic terms that can be used somewhat interchangeably. It depends on how you want to position yourself, market yourself and how your target market responds to each of those terms.

More specifically, a VA who specializes in writing is typically an AVERAGE writer and charges no more than $75 per hour. They also charge based on projects such as web pages. For example, I charge $299 for each real estate web page I write as a VA.

A freelance writer is typically a better than average writer who can charge (and get) more than a VA, if they know how to market themselves. If they call themselves a copywriter, then they're a superior writer who can charge the most, such as $8,000 for one sales page.

Another difference I see is that a freelance writer will write for any industry. VAs specialize in one particular industry and write just for them.

Freelancers and VAs only compete head on when they're both going for the same client, which is very rarely going to occur.

Q: Between a marketing specialist and a VA who specializes in marketing?

A: The biggest difference here is in the mindset of the potential clients. In my experience, people believe that marketing specialists charge more than VAs.

People also believe that marketing specialists give recommendations on what should be done, but they don't actually do the work. Whereas, VAs not only give recommendations on what work should be done, they also do the work.

I hope that answers your questions. If not, please ask more.

Kathy, I see that in today's Expert VA Tip of the Week, you list Writing Specialist and Marketing Specialist as VA specialties that are in demand. Is there a difference between a writing specialist who classifies himself as a freelance writer and one who is a VA? Between a marketing specialist and a VA who specializes in marketing? Do the typical fees vary?

Thanks,
Diana
