Often, the biggest challenge when starting your Virtual Assistant business is having the confidence to overcome fear.
Fear makes you believe that you don’t have the knowledge to build a successful business, the skills that clients will need, or the personality that will draw clients to you.
Having confidence when there’s so much unknown can be tricky. That loud, nagging voice of self-doubt seems to control your thoughts and shatter your self-confidence.
But, without self-confidence, it’s impossible to take the necessary steps to make a change and start living the life of your dreams.
Therefore, you get stuck in a vicious cycle of negative thoughts, self-doubt, and low self-confidence.
These feelings are paralyzing. They bind you to your current set of circumstances with the notion that there’s no possible way to become free.
However, confidence is built. And when you achieve confidence, you empower yourself to make a change, build a successful business, and live the life you desire.
How to Build Your Confidence and Build a Successful Virtual Assistant Business:
Have a Positive Mindset
Researcher of positive psychology and author of Positivity, Barbara L. Frederickson’s theory of Broaden and Build Theory proposes that “when people experience positive emotions, their minds broaden and they open up to new possibilities and ideas.”
On the other hand, the theory notes that when people focus on negative thoughts “the mind constricts and focuses in on the imposing threat (real or imagined), thus limiting one’s ability to be open to new ideas and build resources and relationships.”
When you spend time focusing on that voice of self-doubt, you restrict yourself from reaching your full potential.
But, if you make an intentional effort to focus on the positive, you will open yourself up to more ideas and possibilities.
A strategy to incorporate positive thoughts into your everyday life is to create a positive jar. Think of things you’re grateful for, successes that you’ve had, or things that simply brought you joy throughout the day. Throughout each day, take the time to write down three to five positive things on separate pieces of paper.
Watch the positive thoughts fill up. Allow them to be a reminder of the good in your life. Use them to quiet the negative thoughts. Let them build your confidence.
Learn from Your Mistakes
Mistakes are not something to completely fear. But you must change the way you look at them. Instead of mistakes and failure being something to fear, think of mistakes and failure as your opportunities to learn valuable lessons.
An Entrepreneur article suggests that “Failure is very real, but it is not an end destination — it’s another event in the course of life.” The article explains that “failure is an external event that happens” and “not a personality characteristic.” The article stresses that a failure or mistake is something that merely happens, but does not indicate that you are a failure as a person and does not reflect your self-worth.
By taking a risk, you open yourself up to failures and mistakes. But, it’s what you do with the knowledge gained that makes all the difference.
Instead of allowing your mistakes to bring you down, use them to create a better plan. Learn a new way of doing something. Be more efficient. Be a problem solver.
When you don’t allow your mistakes or fear of failure to become burdens that prohibit you from moving forward, you give yourself the permission to take risks, to make a change, and even to make mistakes along the way. You can go forward confidently knowing that mistakes will happen, but they won’t stop you. You’ll rise above them and become better because of them.
Make the Decision to Change
The first step starts with you. You must make the decision to make a change. You need to take the steps to build your confidence. And, you must decide that you’re not going to be controlled by negative thoughts that control the actions you take.
No one can make this decision for you. People can tell you how great and wonderful you are, but you must believe it. Know that you can make the change. Recognize that you can make a difference.
You don’t have the power to change the past. However, you have full control over your future.
If you’ve been stuck in a rut for too long, make the decision to not be confined by your negative thoughts. Or the negativity that others put on you. Choose to listen to the positive. Believe in yourself, your strength, and your courage. Build your confidence and make the choice to better your life.
